Program
Description
This
program aims to introduce students to self-defense basics through the
concepts and techniques practiced in traditional Asian martial arts. In many martial arts, training goes beyond
fighting to include personal, mental, and spiritual development. The
focus of this camp is on elements of these arts as practiced for sport,
fitness, character development,
and basic self-defense. It
is designed to promote awareness and build confidence, but not over confidence.
Participants learn conflict resolution through awareness, avoidance, and
non-violent alternatives rather than offensive combat strategies.
Students
participating in this camp will not be sparring or using any weapons.
A brief overview of the program contents is shown below. Participants
should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and sneakers.
Effective combat strategies and techniques take years of training to master, and even with extensive training, the best defense is always avoidance. Self-defense actually means doing everything possible to avoid a confrontation. This class aims to introduce participants to fundamental actions which can be implemented in a confrontation when other de-escalation efforts have failed. These actions include distance control, stancing, footwork, hand skills, kicking, combinations, direct and indirect attack, joint immobilization, and takedowns. Students work with partners and practice with hand targets and focus pads. |
